Day Thirty-four - Silbee to Lake Charles

We are in Louisianna. Finally. We didn't see a welcome to Texas sign going into Texas, so we took a picture of the one from this side. We didn't see a welcome to Louisianna sign, so we are hoping to see one on the other side as we leave. As far as scenery goes, not much changed to day. It was pretty much a straight flat 80 miles. The one outstanding feature in the landscape was the azaleas. They were a very brilliant pink. We even saw a couple of orange ones. We had headwinds alot of the day, but they weren't too bad and we were still able to keep a decent pace. We have noticed however, that we have entered the land of no fences and dogs. We got chased a couple of times, but they seem to just want to run us off and not attack us, which is fine by me. I will be wearing my whistle from now on. We seem to cross alot of bridges. The water has turned from the beautiful aqua color of last week, to a mucky brown color. The only places to stop today were a couple of gas stations. We are definitely on back roads. At the first gas station, which we arrived at at about 9:15am, I asked the woman how her day was going. She said it had been pretty slow, but that's because most people sleep in. It was 9:15! I guess things don't move to quickly down here. The next gas station was about 15 miles from Louisianna and someone asked the woman if they had blue bonnet ice cream in Louisianna. She said she didn't know, she never goes there! We're talking 15 miles away. We are told that tomorrow will be an interesting day. There will be alot more to do and see. I posted a picture of a mud column. You see them all along the side of the road. They are made by crawdads. When the water recedes, they dig themselves down into the dirt pushing it up as they go. Very interesting. My wound seems to be healing nicely. I am actually leaving the bandages off tonight. We passed the 2000 mile mark today. That means we only have a little over 1000 to go. We are two thirds of the way there.

30 days down and 20 days to go.
