Day Eleven - Globe to Safford

We got an early start this morning. We had a long day ahead of us and I had to get my bike to the bike shop in Safford before they closed to get my chain problem taken care of. We had a little climbing to get out of town and then a lot of downhill. The first 20 miles went by pretty fast. After we dropped out of the mountains of Globe, we had a series of rollers ahead of us. I could not tackle them as I would have liked to because of my chain, but all in all we rolled right along. At about mile 43 we approached the town of Bylas, home of the Apaches. They were having a tribal council meeting in front of the only grocery store in town. There was a rest stop across the parking lot with a restroom, but there were several men in orange jump suits walking around, so we chose to use the one in the store. It's actually a beautiful area. The mountain in the picture I posted is Mt. Turnbull. The locals say it has snow on it year round. We had a snack and moved along. Shortly after pulling out of town, we hit headwinds! That's right HEADwinds. We were still able to maintain a pace of at least 10 - 12 miles per hour, but you were working for it. We felt we had no choice but to stop at The Taylor Freeze in Pima for ice cream. I mean, we needed the fuel. With 10 miles to go we sucked it up and plugged on. After 83 miles with 2017 feet of elevation gain, we finally pulled in to our hotel!
I peddled on over to the bike shop and saw the picture for the Mt. Graham ride on the wall. Mt. Graham looks very similiar to Mt Turnbull. Anyone want to try it?
11 days down and 47 to go.

  4. Hi Pam,
We continue to follow your progress and admire your committment. Three cheers for hanging in there when it gets tough. Bob and arrived in Borrego Springs this afternoon and found it a warm, quiet afternoon with the birds chirping and the flowers just getting started. We look forward to a warm up ride tomorrrow to get ready for Saturday. It looks like it will be a very flat 80 miles, nothing like you have done. How is you knee?
May the wind always be at your back!
