We left the hotel at about 7:15 am. We wanted to get an early start to try to stay ahead of the traffic. We talked to a couple who drove through a few hours after us, and they said they came upon a 5 car pile up not far from our hotel. I think we did the right thing. The first several miles had a small shoulder with rumble strips taking up most of it. We had to ride in the road (US60) more often than not. The road improved at about mile 12, then we started to climb. We had to ride through a tunnel with no shoulder. That got alittle tense. Before we were done, we had climbed a total of 3825 feet in 48 miles. My chain was slipping like crazy. I got my first injury of the ride. That little thorn sticking out of my leg in the picture, just came out of nowhere. I thought I'd been stung by a bee. Strange....
We made it to The Top of The World where we met up with the sag and from left to right, Rita, Mary, Mike, and Shelley. Oh yeah, that's me on the end. It was downhill from there. I rode most of the day with Shelley from Canada. She's a strong rider and leaves me in the dust on the uphill. I however, as you all know, can overtake her on the downhill. :)
So, the standings for today are:
Uphill:
