We had our map meeting last night and were told it would be a long day. Canada, Ohio and I decided we were going to take no prisoners. We started out with that attitude and completed the 76 mile ride in 4 hours and 36 minutes. The road surface in Texas is pretty much chip and seal. We were told to expect lots of it. It kind of vibrates you. It reminds me of the old Jack LaLane era when they had that weight loss machine that strapped a belt around you and shook the weight off. All in all we made it to Van Horn in time for lunch. It was a good day. The scenery isn't changing much so there weren't alot of pictures to take. I did get chased by my first dog this morning. We rode past a building with 4 or 5 guys sitting on the curb outside. We caught wind of a distinct aroma coming from the area. We all agreed that the dog wasn't vicious, it just had a little contact high and was after my M&Ms. I had no trouble out running it. Canada had pulled out ahead of us at one point and was stopped by the border patrol. They pulled in front of her with lights flashing and the siren blowing. The agent asked her if she was an American citizen. She told them no, she was from Canada. He asked if she had any proof. She said she did. He then asked her if her name was Shelley. It is. Our sag driver, Amy, had set her up.
It's good to know that the agents have a good sense of humor. Oh, that reminds me. Earlier in the day we saw 4 men that had been on bicycles sitting on the side of the road surrounded by the border patrol agents. I guess there is constant activity of that sort in this area.
We reached the 1000 mile mark today!
